Pet Sitting
Who minds your pet when you leave town?
As much as you love your pets, sooner or later you may have to go away from them for business or on vacation; so what do you do? Getting friends and family to care for the pet is a great option, but if none live close to you or if they’re too busy (or allergic), what are you going to do? Enter the pet sitter.
A pet sitter is an alternative to sending your pet to a kennel. Most pet owners prefer pet sitting services because they allow for their pet to stay in a comfortable and familiar environment. Another advantage to hiring a pet sitter is having someone to monitor your house by collecting the mail and watering the plants. Of course, this isn’t a usual part of the pet sitter’s duties, so you’ll have to come to a mutual agreement on any non-pet-related tasks.
Before you hire someone from a pet sitting business, make sure to check their references and ask if they have pet sitting insurance. The person or business should also be bonded to protect against theft. Most pet owners feel more assured being able to meet the pet sitter in advance to ensure that they (and their pet) are comfortable with the person and to leave any personal instructions.
Pet Boarding
If you don’t like the thought of a potential stranger pet sitting in your home, you can choose a pet boarding service or kennel. While the accommodations won’t be as comfortable as your pet may experience at home, most pet boarders have ample space and plenty of animal training to ensure that your pet is well cared for and receives plenty of exercise in your absence.
Pet Day Care
Sometimes, you need someone to watch your pet every day, like if you work long hours and have a hyperactive Jack Russell Terrier at home that will destroy your living room while you’re away. In that case, a pet day care service might be what you need. These businesses offer pet boarding on an hourly basis; you just have to drop your pet off and pick it up again at the appointed time. In the meantime, your pet will be cared for, played with and walked. Pet grooming is often also available at an additional cost. Your pet should be well socialized, though, as it will likely interact with other pets during its stay.
Pet Travel
Of course, if you can’t bear to part from your beloved pet, you can always make arrangements to take it with you. Finding a pet hotel that will accommodate you and your pets away from home is easier than ever. Some famous pet-friendly hotels include the Marriott, Holiday Inn and Best Western chains. Most hotels charge an additional pet cleaning fee, though, and they should be notified in advance that you’ll be bringing your pet with you.
Keep in mind that pet travel can be stressful for your pet as well as for you. Make sure your pet has all of the proper vaccinations, toys and accessories to remain safe, healthy and happy away from home.
