Animal Shelters

A safe place for lost or homeless pets

Animal shelters are places where lost or homeless pets can find their way back to loving homes. The main priority for an animal shelter is to control the local animal population and to remove pets from abusive owners; they are also called upon to assist with overly aggressive or wild animals that are disrupting the community.

Types of Animal Shelters

Animal shelters tend to be either privately owned not-for-profits or municipally funded. Privately owned shelters are often smaller facilities and have staff and volunteers that are able to help socialize or rehabilitate the pets in their care. Municipal facilities have the dual focus of animal control along with animal care. They are often understaffed and overpopulated and may need to resort to euthanasia to keep from being overrun with animals.

Other types of animal shelters include no-kill and open-door animal shelters. So-called no kill animal shelters are those that only use euthanasia as an absolute last resort for sick, suffering or overly aggressive animals. Open-door animal shelters accept any and all pets, but while they don’t require a fee, they will often ask for a donation.

Pet Rescue

Some local animal shelters are not-for-profit agencies that are contracted by municipalities to control the animal population. They are active in pet rescue efforts, helping to remove animals from abusive environments and finding either an animal sanctuary or a new adoptive parent to care for the animal. Dog rescue, cat rescue and even horse rescue is often possible because animal shelters offer a safe place to care for these animals while they wait for a new adoptive home to be found.

Animal advocates believe in animal rights and work to promote them so that animals are treated in a humane way. Animal shelters are often among the strongest champions of animal rights and work to preserve them at all times. They aim to improve the quality of life for pets by informing the public about why pets need to be spayed or neutered, as well as performing these procedures at a reduced rate for pet owners.

Adopting from a Shelter

Adopting a pet from an animal shelter is a great way to add a pet to your family. You are likely saving the life of the animal you adopt. Not only do shelters have mature animals, they often have kittens or puppies that are available for adoption as well. Pets are usually spayed or neutered and dewormed in advance, with the fees for these services embedded in the cost of pet adoption. Even with these fees, adoption is often cheaper than purchasing pets from pet stores or breeders, and it comes with the added benefit of knowing you’ve rescued an animal that was truly in need of a loving home.

I am in need of a warm loving home for 2 beautiful 8 month old kittens. They are mostly grey with white areas and a bit of beige also. They are almost twins!! The one has a long white mard on his nose ( Suave) and his brothers name is Rico. Cute huh??!!! I do love them alot! Unfortunely, the place I am moving to does not except cats. I REALLY would feel better knowing they are gonna be cared for just like I have cared for them. If you know of someone who would love 2 special kittens, please let me know. Sincerely, Carole

I would like information on how to get my yellow lab certified as a therapy or a buddy dog. He is the only one who can bring me out of a very serious panic attack. I have seen on line where you can buy vest and tags but are they really excepted on airlines and in other business? Any information would be deeply appreciated.

I found an adorable stafford shier bull terrier mixed with lab. When I found her (Bella) she was emanciated and near death. I took her to my vet and she was treated for heart/round worms. It was a scary time because this poor little girl was hanging on to life and she is now doing wonderful. I am moving out of my house due to foreclosure and I need to find Bella a very good home, where she will be treated with lots of tender love and care. Bella is between 2-4 years of age, 20 " long and 14" tall and weighs 40 lbs. I live in the Tampa Bay area and have called all shelters and they are full. I use to volunteer with the SPCA and I know the kill dogs and Bella deserves a chance at life. I am willing to pay for all her shots and for her to be spayed. I will also pay for 6 mos. of heartworm and flee control. Bella does need some training as it appears she was very mistreated and lived outside and I will pay for half the cost for professional training or possibly the full cost. I did find a NO-KILL shelter in Bonafay, FL,, however; due to my health I cannot make a 9 hour drive. If anyone is interested in saving Bella, please call me @727.645.7313 and I will be happy to send you a picture of Bella. Bella will make someone very happy and a good companion. God Bless to All, Cheryl LeFebvre

Any luck finding Bella a home. You can't take her with you to your new housing? I have 7 cats and can't imagine parting with any. I hope I never have to make a choice. I sacrificed everything to have them with me. It's the toughest decision ever. i hope she finds a good home.

I have a 4 y/o female pit and a 4 month old baby. She is not fixed. i rescued her before she was put into a FL shelter where she immediately would've been put down. i spent over a yr training her and now shes as docie as a cat, unless she decides to lick u to death..lol. i am looking for a fixed male pitbull puppy so she can have a baby of her own so shes not so jealous. because of the money i spend for my baby i really dont have much to spend buyin a puppy but i have everything n all needed to take care of a healthy pup. i need my family completed and i think a lil pup would do that. :) if anyone out there could or is willing to help me out, id be more than willing to train, house break, and love him w/ all my heart n so would my "pup" Lady. she wants a baby for herself. it would make our whole family a complete happy family, people n pups. Thank you to everyone who's read this...most i mportant must b fixed or i have to get him fixed. i cant have pit puppies, i cant give them away knowing what some people do to them. i couldnt sleep at night if i ever gave any away....help make us complete plz?!!

The SPCA in Cinti is a horrible place! I left there in tears. The runs appeared clean enough, but I am referring to the staff. They are curt in their attitude, and it is painfully obvious that it is just an income-there is no presence of dedication. When working with animals, there should be an awareness of the special service provided. I have at times donated to the humane society, but wish I was able to give so much more, and volunteer, also. I feel the efforts and concern of the humane society are sincere.

I took in a female lab/collie mix dumped in my neighborhood. Sweet, lovable and playful. Took her to vet and paid $200 for shots, etc. She's just too big for the house and yard, plus, I work all day sometimes late. Please consider emailing me if you are interested. She needs a good home and space to move around. I also bought a $100 crate for her. Her name is Chloe and she's about five months old.

Is it possible to start a no-kill Shelter-North Shore League in Baker City, Oregon? It also looks like Ozona, Texas could use one too. I have close to the same predictament here in Baker City. I have 14 cat rescues and none were originally mine. I get all of them spayed/neutered and vaccinated as much as possible. There is a local 519-Pets here although they never have any room for cats. Nor usually any foster homes. They are trying to raise funds to start a shelter, but it won't be a n0-kill. Also they don't usually take any scared cats or ferals. They do have a feral program here to spay/neuter as long as there are funds. But none are vaccinated. And if they are too young to be neutered or spayed they are killed. I'm a young senior citizen and if you would be wlling to help, I would be willing to help. Please let me know. Thank you.

Can you help me? I paid for a one year membership at our animal shelter. I volunteered and helped in every way I could. I am banned for no reason and would like to know how I can overturn the ban? Thanks. Suze
Posted by Sherri Russo on February 16,2010 at 10:54 PM
What do you mean , "paid for a membership"? What does a membership include? Never heard of a membership at a shelter! Do you mean that you sponsored an animal for a year? Explain!

I'M MAD AS HELL...I'VE COME TO REALIZE THAT NEARLY ALL PEOPLE ARE EITHER IRRESPONSIBLE ABOUT TAKING CARE OF THEIR CATS OR THEY MERELY WANT TO HARM,MAIME OR KILL AS MANY CATS AS THEY CAN. FOR THE LAST YEAR MY WIFE AND I HAVE TRIED TO CONVINCE OUR NEIGHORS THAT THEY NEED TO TAKE CARE OF THEIR CATS. THESE NEIGHBORS BROUGHT THEIR (INDOOR) CATS WITH THEM WHEN THEY MOVED IN NEXT DOOR. THEN THEY PICKED UP SEVERAL KITTENS FROM ANOTHER TOWN. THESE NEIGHBORS THEN "KICKED OUT" ALL THE KITTENS AND EVEN THE INDOOR CATS BECAUSE THE KITTENS AND ADULT CATS MADE TOO MUCH OF A MESS AND THE NEIGHBORS DISLIKED CHANGING THE CAT LITTER BOXES. NONE OF THESE POOR CATS WERE SPAYED, NUETERED, OR HAD THEIR RABIES SHOTS. THEN TO TOP IT OFF, OUR LOCAL GOVERNMENT DECLARED WAR ON ALL CATS IN TOWN. HUNDREDS OF THE POOR CREATURES WERE ROUNDED UP BY THE ANIMAL CONTROL OFFICER OR BY THE CITZENS THAT HATE ALL CATS. MANY OF THESE POOR AND HARMLESS CATS WERE THEN EITHER SHOT ON SIGHT BY HOMEOWNERS OR WERE DUMPED OUT IN THE RURAL RANCHING AREA SOUTH OF TOWN. IN THE MEAN TIME MY WIFE AND I CONVINCED OUR NEIGHBORS OF THE IMPORTANCE OF HAVING ALL THEIR CATS (APPROXIMATELY 20 BY THIS TIME AS THE FEMALES STARTED HAVING KITTENS) SPAYED,NUETERED, AND VACCINATED AGAINST RABIES. WE TOLD THEM THAT WE WOULD EVEN PAY HALF THE COST FOR DOING THIS. AS IT TURNED OUT WE HAD TO PAY FOR ABOUT 3/4'S OF THE COST. WE THOUGHT EVERYTHING WOULD NOW BE SAFE FOR THE POOR CATS. WE WERE WRONG. SEVERAL OF THE CATS TURNED UP MISSING AND HAVE NEVER BEEN SEEN AGAIN; ONE WAS SHOT IN THE SIDE AND STILL HAS THE BULLET INSIDE; AND ONE HAD HIS REAR LEG BROKEN. I PAID THE VETERNARIAN TO TAKE CARE OF THE ONE THAT WAS SHOT AND ALSO THE ONE THAT HAD HIS REAR LEG BROKEN. THE VETERNARIAN SAID THAT THE BRAKE WAS DEFINETLY DONE BY BLUNT-FORCE TRAUMA AND BELIEVED THAT IT WAS PROBABLY DONE BY BEING KICKED. THIS BILL COST ME AND MY WIFE NEARLY $700. AS OF THIS DATE WE HAVE NEVER RECIEVED A SINGLE THANK YOU FROM OUR NEIGHBORS. WE STILL HAVE ONE OTHER NEIGHBOR THAT IS DETERMINED TO GET RID OF THE REMAINDER OF THESE POOR CATS AND IS NOW USING LIVE-TRAPS TO CATCH THEM ON HIS PROPERTY. SOME OF THESE HE HAS TURNED OVER TO ANIMAL CONTROL, BUT I BELIEVE THAT THIS NEIGHBOR IS KILLING SOME OF THE OTHERS THAT HE HAS TRAPPED, BECAUSE AFTER THEY TURNED UP MISSING MY WIFE AND I CHECKED WITH ANIMAL CONTROL ABOUT THEM AND ANIMAL CONTROL STATED THAT THEY HAD NOT BEEN PICKED UP. OF THE 20 CATS THERE ARE NOW ABOUT 10 LEFT, THE OTHERS HAVE SIMPLY VANISHED AND THEY DID NOT JUST WANDER AWAY, BECAUSE THEY WERE ALWAYS AT MY HOUSE WHEN WE FED THEM IN THE MORNING AND EVENING. SO NOW TO THE REASON FOR MY WRITING......MY WIFE AND I NEED TO FIND A NO-KILL SHELTER OR PERSONS THAT WANT TO ADOPT THE CATS (ALL ARE SPAYED OR NUETERED AND HAVE THEIR RABIES SHOTS). SO FAR NO ONE WANTS TO HELP AND I'M AFRAID THAT BY THE TIME SOMEONE CAN HELP US ALL THE CATS WILL TURN UP MISSING. WE LIVE IN A SMALL WEST TEXAS TOWN NAMED OZONA, TEXAS.

THAT IS CRUEL! who in their right mind would do that to cats! i mean come on why would they do that! I CANNOT BELIEVE SOME PEOPLE ! wow that makes me want to where ever those people are and shoot them! O MY GOD THAT IS UNBELIEVABLE! the things people do these days i mean what happened to when we were................................ not like that! REALY! theres nothing that makes me more mad then somebody abusing innocent animals plz if there is any way i can donate money PLEASE speak up!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Posted by Molly on March 11,2010 at 06:13 PM
we have a simular situation..grrrr only differance is, our nieghbors who had all the cats just packed up and moved, leaving about a dozen cats ( unspayed and unnuetered) to fend for themselves....these people need to go to jail.....
Posted by Sherri Russo on February 16,2010 at 11:02 PM
This is beyond disgusting! Can't you get ASPCA involve? Law enforcement? No one has a right to shoot a cat. There are laws. I would probably steal his traps. Call the media and let them televise what the neighbors are doing! Catch the catch yourself and bring tem to a no kill shelter that will help you. Get as much media covberage as you can. Radio will help also. Turn all the bastards in. Rescue as many as yo can, possible hold themin your garage until you get shelter help on placing them! i'll pray for you all!

Millk (human kind) is not good for cats/kittens. It MAY give kittens diahrea (not sure of the spelling) but if it is really young you can use a mixture of evaporated milk 1 can cut with a can of water, baby rice a cop, 2 tablespoons of Karo, a bottle of baby meat NOTHING ELSE JUST MEAT) and some taurine. You can get the taurine in a health food store. Be sure to use the capsules not the tablets. I saved 3 out of 4 kittens that 3 vets told me were not going to make it on this formula. Make sure the baby meat is chicken NOT chicken & rice or any other mixture or turkey without anything else either. Good luck if you need any more help let me know. Carolyn

Who had been found in a dumpster, He has the coloring and eyes of a Weimeraner, small face, which he buuts into your face and purrs very loud. He, I named him " Smokey Dooders." He needs to be neutered, and has not had any shots,so we have him in the lg dog kennel in the music room, I have appt. this week for neut. and rabies. I can not find anywhere where they will not eventually "put him down". It breaks my heart, he is such a love bug, but my other cat even though de-clawed would really tear him up. I have posted adds for the orange ones because they are eating dry food the others are still too young. I need a place to take them, I can not afford to care for them and I had three cats of my own already. Can you help or know where I can take them?

I have a Boston Terrier and am looking for a good home for her. She is about 12 years old. Very quiet personality; great companion. Just wants to be loved. She belonged to my daughter who passed away from breast cancer in 2007. I have had her since then. She does have a small problem with her bladder which could be treated with medication. Her name is Balou. I am urgently seeking someone to take her. Where do you live?
