Pet Health

Maximize the health of your pet

Pet health is a major concern for the owner of any pet, large or small. What can you do to ensure that your pet is healthy now and stays that way for the rest of its life? Here are a few keys to keeping your pet at its peak.

Pet Diet

Remember, just as your doctor advises you to eat right, the same goes for your pet. Maintaining a healthy diet for your pet goes a long way to sustaining its current health. What this means (especially for cat and dog owners) is that you need to feed your pets what they need and not necessarily what they want. Table scraps are not good for your pets, and some foods that humans eat can actually be poisonous for a pet (like chocolate is for dogs).

Besides feeding them the right foods, you should also make sure to keep the portions in check. Many pets will continue to eat well after they've had their fill, so serving too much food can lead to obesity in your pet, which will reduce its lifespan and its quality of life.

Pet Exercise

Proper pet care includes regular exercise, which helps to maintain muscle tone and blood circulation, reducing visits to the vet, as well as health problems due to lethargy.

Most pets naturally love exercise, whether it's walking or playing with their owners. Having a pet is often a good way for owners to get more exercise, as well. Make the most of the opportunity and have fun with it.

Pet Health Insurance

Even if you give your pets plenty of exercise and the nutritious foods they need, other aspects of pet health care include pet health insurance. Insurance helps protect your pet's health – and your pocketbook – by covering the costs of emergency vet expenses in the case of an accident or genetic defect leading to health issues. Pet health care insurance can help offset these costs and ensure that your pet gets the timely medical attention it deserves. Take your time to find a pet health plan that works for you. Some employers may even offer this as an added benefit in their group insurance benefits package.

Alternative Pet Health

Other ways to maintain the health of your pet is to consider supplementing their diet with vitamins and minerals as they grow older. You can find a pet health pharmacy that can provide calcium or glucosamine supplements, which can assist large dogs with arthritis or joint pain as they advance in years. You can also look into holistic pet health options, such as specially formulated foods that are organic and contain no preservatives, chemicals or food coloring. You should consult a veterinarian that has access to your pet records before making any drastic dietary changes. A veterinarian is also a good source of answers for any other pet health questions or concerns you may have.

For further information on how to maintain your pet's health, you can visit various online pet health sites. Pets are precious; make sure you give them every opportunity for a full and healthy life of love and fun.

my 9yr old daughter's hamster is sick. his eyes keep getting stuck shut and it seems like he's sneezing what should I do?
Posted by Drene taylor on January 01,2011 at 03:09 PM
What I would do is I would take a damp rag and just gently dab his eyes with water. And try cleaning his cage and of he is cold try keeping him warm with a heating pad under her cage

My dog is starting to have some arthritis with the weather changing and I know you can give them asprin, but I can not remember the dosage. I have been giving him Bayer asprin 325mg once daily, but I think he needs more. Does anyone know the dosage per pound, or can some one tell me how much I can give a 50 lbs dog. Also is it ok to use Bayer asprin, or should I get the regular buffered asprin, I thought they were the same but not sure.

I have a puppy named Ziggy. He is five months old. I just rescued him from a shelter and I am looking for some help. He has a cut on his nose. Its swollen quite a bit. Last night it was pussing a little, so I think it might be infectted. I do not have money to see a vet right now. The cut does not bother or effect him in any way but I am very worried. Is there anything I can put on it to help it get better?

My dog gave birth to puppies about 5 weeks ago. We are in the process of weaning the puppies right now. My dog's nipples are getting smaller, but one is still quite a bit larger than the rest, it looks quite red and swollen. I'm worried that it might be infected, or maybe she has breast cancer now (I'm not sure if that's possible, but I'm just worried). The puppies were an accident, so I don't have a lot of money. I'd like to try to do something without taking her to the vet, I love her so much (of course), and I WILL take her to the vet if it doesn't get better, but I'd like to know if there is anything I could try first, to at least make it better before it gets worse. If anyone has ANY ideas, please let me know. I'm extremely worried. Thank you so much!

6 year old, male Bichon Friese has chronic ear infections with yeast. Has been on multiple ear treatments to no avail. Has a brother that licks his ears and has gotten much better with our interference. Dr. has put him on 100 mg Intaconazole for 30 days. Is this drug safe, I'm worried - I paid $200 for the RX and there is an FDA black box warning?!!

Here is what my vet gave me for my baby she has issues with ear yeast infection and this works, Treaderm, you put 3-4 drops every 12 hours and it is to be refrigerated and it only cost like 15.00 or 20.00 and it works wonders on her, Try to make sure that you open the ear so that your baby can get air in the ear, my vet said that is why she is getting them she isnt getting enough air in her ear Good luck

I have never used this service before but i need some help. My little teacup Chihuahua is not acting right. He is laying down on the floor almost anywhere i put him down. and is being very distant and non loving " complete opposite from normal behavior." I think it might be stomach issues but i am not sure. I have hand fed him some chicken broth that he is holding down well but all the vets in town are closed. Is there anything else i can do to pinpoint the issue or help him feel better. PLEASE HELP!
Posted by jackie on May 21,2011 at 11:33 PM
Try rubbing his stomach, he could have gas and not releasing it, I have a beagle and she gets gas sometimes that she can't release, so I rub her stomach and then watch out, Your little could have heart worms also, and that does need vet attn as soon as you can get there.

Is there something I can cook myself that would be safe/healthy for a dog on k/d food and one on c/d food and one with no issues? The cost is high and it's hard to keep them out of each other's food. I've noticed both "special" foods have rice and low fat. Any suggestions? Thanks.

I adopted a pug puppy from the animal shelter 10 days ago. Shortly after, he developed a cough that sounds like bronchitis and some sinus drainage. The vet at the shelter recommended robitussin dm twice per day. Hiscough has worsened today. What can I safely do for him tonight before getting him to the vet in the morning? He is male, approx 2 months old and was eating well and very playful up until earlier this evening. Thank you for any help you can provide!!

Hello, My labrador puppie who will be 17 weeks old tomorrow has had his share of other than formed stools. This has been going on for about 10 weeks now. Obviously he has been to our vets regarding this throughout. He was on Albon, has been on Flagyl (both liquid and pill) now for sometime along with FloriForta (spelling?). His diet has been ID soft and hard food and has been eating HP dry for about a week now. Seems his best stools were when he was eating the soft ID and liquid Flagyl. We hadn't seen blood in his stools for awhile now until this morning. Very, very little, or could have been brown color with the dary gray/green color of stool? In anycase, he has had blood test, his regular shots.....my wife and myself are getting concerned. He is very active and full of fun......we've been feeding him about 1 1/2 cups in the morning and 1 1/2 cups in the evening. Any advice? Many thanks, Bill

Are you aware that dogs can get urinary tract infections like women can? Take in a first morning urine sample & have your Vet run a test. Generally treated easily with an antibiotic. On the negative side, she may be having trouble with her kidneys. This would require more extensive testing from your Vet.

My cockapoo is 21/2 yrs old is medium sized( about 26 lbs) He used to eat his stool but now leaves it alone. He will eat anything else he finds even though I leash walk him .Should I continue giving him 2 meals a dbay as he seems hungry. He does NOT look mal nourished. Since the vet could not find a reason for very loose stool when he was a pup , she suggested 2 meals a day of rice and chicken. I have maintained that diet.
