Tips for choosing toys for dogs

All too often, we end up purchasing dog toys that our dogs won’t be interested in or that may even be harmful. It is up to the consumer to educate oneself about the different types of dog toys in order to be able to make the best purchasing decision. Here are some basics so that you can be better informed about which toys are good choices and which toys should be avoided.

Recommended Dog Toys

Good dog toys are designed to fulfill your dog’s natural urges and desires. For example, many dogs have an urge to chew and keep their mouths busy, so there are many chew toys out there to satisfy that urge. In fact, any chew toy made from a thick, durable, flexible plastic or vinyl substance is generally a good toy choice. Many dogs also enjoy a squeaker or other noise-making device inside their chew toy, or even talking dog toys.

Toys that help keep your dog active and interacting with family members are also great choices because they provide essential exercise and help satisfy social instincts. Some examples are balls and other toys that can be thrown and retrieved, as well as rope pull toys.

Finally, consider purchasing a reward-dispensing toy to keep your dog motivated and interested. Kong dog toys are heavy-duty rubber chew toys that can be loaded with a treat. The dog must manipulate and chew the toy to get fragments of the treat dispensed.

Dog Toys to Avoid

Unfortunately, there are some dog toys out there that can be dangerous. Rawhide-based toys and treats can stick in your dog’s throat and cause it to choke; a vinyl, rubber or plastic dog bone is a better option. If you want edible dog toys Greenies contain real, digestible greens in a long-lasting dog treat.

Also avoid any toy that has parts or pieces that could be chewed off or detached— for example, very soft plastic, pieces of string or cloth, or small details like buttons. Look for a durable toy made of thick plastic or rubber that is molded in a single piece. Stuffed dog toys are acceptable, but make sure they do not have fur or plush that can be chewed off.

Play is very important for dogs, but so is safety. Investing in the proper toys can help ensure your pet’s health and happiness for a long time.
