Dog Shampoo

Great shampoo for dog grooming

Shampooing your dog is an essential part of its care. Not only does it prevent odors and keeps your pet looking great, but it also prevents bacterial infections of the skin and helps to prevent dandruff, eczema and rashes caused by skin allergies.

How often you shampoo your dog depends on the breed and the situation. Maybe your pet rolled in something foul smelling or has a health condition that causes an odor. Or, maybe you plan to enter your dog in an upcoming dog show. Whatever the circumstance, just remember that bathing your pet too frequently can dry out its skin and cause more serious problems.

Human shampoos can be harmful to your pet because the pH level of a dog is higher than that of a person. Therefore, it is best to use a shampoo made specifically for dogs.

Choosing a Dog Shampoo

There is a wide variety of dog shampoos available, including special formulations for puppies, adult dogs and specific breeds. There are even medicated dog shampoos to address various skin or fur conditions.

Sensitive skin is common in many dogs, so buying the mildest shampoo for any breed is always a good idea. Unscented, hypoallergenic shampoos are best for dogs with skin allergies. For dry skin, a shampoo with skin conditioners should be used.

If your dog has long hair, look for a de-tangling shampoo to make it easier to brush your dog's coat. Antibacterial dog shampoos are also good for long-haired dogs because they are particularly prone to having bacteria in their fur, possibly leading to infection. Of course, your veterinarian may have some tips and recommendations for finding the best dog shampoo for your particular pet, as well.

Homemade and Natural Dog Shampoo Alternatives

Buying shampoo for your pet can put a dent in your pocketbook, especially if you bathe your pet often, so some people get creative and make their own. One recipe for homemade dog shampoo that works well and is safe for your all skin types is "Soapy Cider." In a clean plastic container, mix:

  • 1/2 cup mild dish soap (Dove works best)
  • 1/2 cup apple cider vinegar
  • 1/4 cup glycerin
  • 1 ½ cups water

Be sure when making this shampoo that you always use the correct amount of water.

If it's too cold or you don't have time to bathe your dog, try this dry natural dog shampoo. Sprinkle baking soda on your dog's coat and massage vigorously. Then simply brush your pet — the coat will be shiny, and your dog will smell fresh and clean.

Shampooing your pet regularly will help to keep it happy and comfortable and is essential to the overall well-being of your dog.
