Dog Leashes

How to choose the correct dog leash

Everyone who owns a dog is familiar with dog leashes. Even the best trained dog will occasionally give in to its base instincts, so it is necessary to have a leash on a dog while walking. This is the best way to protect the dog, since it allows the owner to quickly pull the dog away from garbage or cars. Leashes provide many benefits both to the dog and the owner, so it's no wonder that so many communities and parks have strict leash laws.

Choosing the Right Leash

Many people simply go to the store and grab the cheapest, simplest leash that they can find, or make one out of an old piece of rope or a belt. This may work, mostly, but it is an inferior option. There are many types of leashes and dog collars available, and they are designed to fit every sort of dog. There are even dog leashes and harnesses for small dogs or dogs with necks that wouldn't make a collar effective. Retractable dog leashes are also available, which allow the owner to quickly reel a dog in, and you can even find dog leash accessories to make the leashes more effective or comfortable.

Most people use nylon dog leashes, but leather dog leashes tend to last longer and look better, and are not that much more expensive. They are particularly good for large dogs like Labrador retrievers, as they are very tough and do not break easily. Fashion-minded people can choose among many lines of designer dog leashes.

Leash Training Your Dog

Leash training a dog takes some time, but it is very important and rewarding for both the pet and its owner. It is necessary to teach a dog to get used to a leash so that it does not choke itself and that it understands when you want to pull it back. To do this, start out with short, small walks and pull the dog frequently to keep it in line. Call the dog when pulling it, to ensure that the dog learns that a tug on the leash means you want it to come closer to you. It will take awhile for the dog to learn, but most dogs are quick studies and enjoy the walks.
