Dog Collars

Choosing the right dog collar

Dog collars are the most essential accessory for dog owners. They are generally intended to help control the dog when on a leash, but can also serve to keep identification tags with the dog should it ever get separated from its owner. For these purposes most any collar will do, but there are several collars made to satisfy a number of additional purposes as well. Some are for training purposes and some are merely for looks. There are many options to consider when purchasing a dog collar.

Dog Collars for Function

There are many different dog collars available that have been made to perform a particular function. The most common of these is a training collar referred to as a choke collar. This collar continues to tighten if the dog pulls too hard on the leash. Such collars were created with the intention of teaching the dog to stay with their owner.

Another type of collar is widely used to stop dogs from barking: the anti-bark collar. These collars will often have a spray device filled with citronella which will spray the dog if it barks. There are even electronic dog collars which are commonly used in obedience training as well. These collars have a remote and a shock device attached to the collar which the owner can activate if the dog misbehaves.

Dog Collars for Fashion

If the collar doesn't need to serve a specific training function, then most owners will just find a dog collar that is best suited to the personality of their pet. The range of dog collar styles is wider than one might imagine. For tough dog breeds, there are spiked dog collars and studded dog collars. You can also find leather dog collars, dog collars with sequins, lighted dog collars and personalized dog collars that can be embroidered with the dog's name. Even big-name designers are taking care of fashionable, high-class dogs by making more and more designer dog collars available on the market.
