A complete guide to Maltese dogs

[what's this?]

The Maltese is considered a kind of aristocrat in the pet world, having long been bred for show and companionship. Heartbreakingly adorable and irresistibly cuddly, regular and teacup Maltese dogs are nimble, sturdy and spirited.

Height: Maltese puppies generally grow to an adult height of 8 to 10 inches. The teacup Maltese is about the height of an average human adult's hand.

Weight: Full-sized Maltese poodles don't normally weigh more than 1 pound per inch of height. The same holds true of the teacup Maltese.

Coat: Maltese dogs are famous for their shimmering, silky white coats. Some owners prefer to keep the coat short; others let it grow long. Either way, American Kennel Club and Maltese breeder standards dictate that only a white or ivory coat is acceptable.

Ears and Eyes: The eyes of a Maltese puppy should be round and very dark in color. This breed's feathered, low-set ears ought to hang down close to the head.

Tail: The tail of a Maltese dog should drape over its back and feature thick, bushy white hair.

Despite their tiny size, teacup Maltese dogs and their full-sized Maltese poodle cousins display a high degree of courage. They love attention and frolicking, much like the cocker spaniel, but can be taught a wider range of tricks than most dogs. This breed gets along very well with other pets and shows a great deal of love and affection for its human companions.

AKC Group: Toy

Training: A Maltese puppy can be very hard to housebreak. It's vital to avoid the so-called "small dog syndrome," in which the owner spoils the dog to the point that the dog believes itself to be the pack leader. This will lead to a wide range of behavioral issues that may be very difficult or even impossible to correct once the Maltese dog matures into adulthood.

Ideal Environment: These dogs were bred to be spoiled, and do very well in urban, indoor settings. They remain active when indoors and can make do without a backyard to play in. Maltese dogs also dislike hot weather and damp environments.

Health and Care

Feeding: A Maltese puppy that gets used to eating table scraps is likely to become a finicky eater in adulthood. Try to avoid feeding Maltese dogs "people food."

Grooming: Maltese breeders consider these dogs high maintenance in terms of grooming, especially if a long coat is preferred. They require regular, if not daily, brushing. Professional manicuring is recommended for Maltese dogs with long fur.

Exercise: A half-hour walk once a day should suffice for an average Maltese dog. They are great apartment pets and tend to get enough exercise for their small statures by playing indoors.

Health Problems: A Maltese puppy or adult can easily get sunburned along its hair parting. Skin and respiratory problems are relatively common. Also, as the dog ages, regular veterinary care is needed to detect frequently occurring problems like canine cancer and canine arthritis.

Average Lifespan: A Maltese poodle enjoys one of the longest life expectancies of any dog breed, averaging 15 to 18 years.

Find Maltese Puppies for Sale

Beyond checking Maltese rescue resources online or in the local area, prospective owners can find Maltese puppies for sale through dog breeders. The price of a puppy can be prohibitively high, generally ranging between $800 and $1,500, so Maltese rescue centers make excellent alternatives for cost-conscious prospective owners. Avoid dealing with puppy mills – these farms subject animals to abhorrent living conditions and tend not to take proper care of their puppies.

Hello Web Admin, I noticed that your On-Page SEO is is missing a few factors, for one you do not use all three H tags in your post, also I notice that you are not using bold or italics properly in your SEO optimization. On-Page SEO means more now than ever since the new Google update: Panda. No longer are backlinks and simply pinging or sending out a RSS feed the key to getting Google PageRank or Alexa Rankings, You now NEED On-Page SEO. So what is good On-Page SEO?First your keyword must appear in the title. Then it must appear in the URL.You have to optimize your keyword and make sure that it has a nice keyword density of 3-5% in your article with relevant LSI (Latent Semantic Indexing). Then you should spread all H1,H2,H3 tags in your article.Your Keyword should appear in your first paragraph and in the last sentence of the page. You should have relevant usage of Bold and italics of your keyword. There should be one internal link to a page on your blog and you should have one image with an alt tag that has your keyword....wait there's even more Now what if i told you there was a simple Wordpress plugin that does all the On-Page SEO, and automatically for you? That's right AUTOMATICALLY, just watch this 4minute video for more information at. seo plugin

I am a kind, thoughtful, caring 11 year old Girl with lots and lots of love to be share with a female Maltese to raise and train and of course teach cool tricks. I am taking training courses to train her whenever I bring her home. My Daddy is disabled and single and raising me on his own so we can't afford to buy her but we have budgeted to take care of her and it would be nice to be able to have a special pooch to cuddle up with on occasion after I help Daddy with the chores and house duties. You will be blessed if you can help me find my special pooch that I am gonna name Marshmello since Malteses are white and I’ll call her marsha for short since she will be a girl (female) like me. Oh! I typed this myself because I am in advanced classes at school from making the Honor Roll, so one of my advanced classes is Business Keyboarding. I try to be confident, yet humble to build my self esteem, but not arrogant if I want to make new friends, so my Daddy tells me. Thank You for your kindness to help me with my quest in search of my new special friend. So do have a great safe glorious day. My Aunts all work, so they would chip in if we ever had an emergency that required extra care. We live in Sanford, Florida close to Lake Mary. Respectfully,Courteney

We understand completely. We put to sleep our FoxyLady Maltese-female on Sunday 2/10/13 at 1:30 p.m. 16 1/2 years-- stroke Unfortunately we have one more time to go through this. Our SnowBunny 14 1/2 years --- has cushings but is doing well for now with natural medication. I have to tell myself everyday " It is better to have them and love them, -- then never to had them at all." In the meantime, we have to be torn apart by the agony. My wife has still not been able to think clearly about this. We are listening and understand.

Try looking up Ceaser Milano, also known as the dog whisperer. Dont know if he has a web site but you can always find him on Nat Geo, Thats national geographic and his show is "The Dog Whisperer". If you can find a site for him then look for a contact locale and ask him because he is the best dog person on the planet, ask anyone who knows of him? You can also try to borrow a friends older or already trained dog so ur dog follows? thats how I do mine. I do know that sticking the nose in or yelling, etc does not work unless you want ur dog to be in fear whenever you ask something of it? I do know that you need to take them out many times a day and keep out long enuff for them to go then give lots of praise. They have to go out 1st thing in the morn, after each meal, after each nap & definitley B4 bed, maybe even in middle of night if they still get up in the night? You have to be consistant with this until they learn that outside is what pleases you and you know they always want to please, especially if you make it aware of how much you r pleased when they do go. If you take them as many times as it requires then it shouldnt take long at all, maybe not even a week. Oh yeah you also have to take them out even after they have already had an accident in the house. If you dont have time or cannot take them as much as needed then I suggest a caGE AND OR PUPPY LINERS IN A PLAYPEN, MY SISTER DOES THIS FOR ALL 4 OF HER TEACUPS. WHOOPS, HIT THAT dang cap key again. A doggy door is always helpful for many things too, just a thought. Luck to U. T

I would love to have a female teacup Maltese to love and care for and play with. I need a small Puppy as I am a Senior and could not handle a large doggie. I live in southern Tennessee close to Alabama. I cannot afford an expensive dog, but I can pay some. They are so adorable and they are a loving little lap dogs. Very affectionate and they do not want you to get out of their site at all. They are also so intelligent. They are just perfect and that is not to mention their outside beauty. I want one so bad. Preferably a young puppy so I can learn about it and we can get to know each other almost from the beginning. I would even love to have 2 of them.

You need to be asking for a Maltese that may weigh less than 4lbs. The AKC breed Maltese does not have a teacup size nor do they recognize the word teacup for the maltese. they are of the TOY breed and all weights are standard under 8lbs. I raise malteses and I do have small maltese. You need to look at dad and mom and ask their weights,. that will give a reasonable idea of what the babies will weigh and tell them you would prefer the runt usually they are a 1lb smaller than dad. my male weighs 4lbs and we did have a runt as small as 2 1/2lbs full grown. You need to be very aware that the runt even full grown needs lots of attention and care. simple things like keeping them away from people who are sick with colds and flus, away from drafts in cold weather. wrapping in blankers like a baby if you do take them outside in cold weather. remember they catch colds in their lungs before in their nose and eyes,. so pneumonia is always present. I hope this information helps you in your deciscion,. sorry I do not have any puppies right now I wont for 4 months. Good luck and if you have any quedtions please email me, I will help you as much as possible. Amy

Hi, I've been looking for a maltese puppy for awhile now. Unfortunately, I've had no luck. As you can see, my budget is very small. All I can pay is $150(or free) for the puppy. NO SHIPPING. I would perfer to come pick the puppy up in person. It has to be female and a pure bred. Not older than four months(16weeks) if possible. Also, If she's potty trained would be great, but not a requirement. The farthest I'll go to pick the puppy up is about 4 hours from Houston, Texas in any direction. Hopefully, I'll have some luck on here. You can contact me at Thank you for reading!

I think ur time would be better spent on english and spelling classes. Its a good thing dogs dont notice things like that, although they do know the difference between say spanish and english as well as other languages because they go bythe tone of the word or command not the actual language itself. Lucky you and new doggy maybe, Tee

I am looking for a male maltese puppy in Nashville TN area. I want on less than a year old because we have a ten year old daughter we want him to grow with. I had a shih tzu that was given to me when he was 5 weeks because the owner sold his mother and I raised him on a baby bottle but on November 01, 2009 he was killed in our house fire and he would have turned three on 12/15/09 and he was like my child and that hurt my family deeply. I can't pay a lot for one but I can surely love him and take care of him. Please if you have one please email me.

maltese are toy dogs and dont come in teacup. they also dont even need a yard let alone a very large yard. I suggest if you want one that bad that you read up on them and put something a little more enticing in your next request ad? Helpful? hope so, T

Desperately wish to have a female maltese puppy for christmas. I live strictly on disability so cannot afford to pay for one. I live in Indianapolis, IN, so if anyone could find it in their heart to provide a disabled lady with a loving gift for the holidays, I would be forever greatful and take very good care of this wonderfully loving dog and treat her as one of my family... Thanks for considering me... I can be reached at 317-641-4668.

I have gotten an animal just recently off of kujiji and this animal is so neglected and i need to find a groomer to finish the work me and my daughter have tied todo he had four inche's of mat's and the most disgusting stuff i have ever seen in my life i just cut a toe nail that was totally curled into his foot. I need to find a cheap priced groomer to help us fix this little guy up he did not deserve to be treated this way and all we want is to have him finished up we have worked on him for a week between the both of us and would appreciate to be pointed in the right direction. Thank-you

I would suggest calling your local humane society and see where they might send you for a place that does charity or pro bono cases. They may even have people on the property there for their animals? good luck and god bless you for doing what ur are doing. We have 2 rescues and are expecting 2 more. We almost dont have a pot to piss in but we have a very loving and well maintained home with healthy animals and a very understanding vet, yipee for that. I wish you and yours health & happiness from a kindred spirit T
