A complete guide to husky dogs

[what's this?]

Originally domesticated as sled dogs, huskies have since become popular and friendly pets. Resilient and energetic, a husky dog makes an excellent companion but is a poor guard dog due to its gentle disposition.

Height: Both the Siberian husky and the Alaskan husky are about the same size as a Labrador retriever, reaching a height of 21 to 24 inches in adulthood. Males are usually an inch or two taller than females.

Weight: Full-grown, healthy male husky dogs weigh 45 to 60 pounds. Females are usually about 10 pounds lighter.

Coat: The fur of a husky is double-layered. Its undercoat is thick, while its topcoat is straight and fine.

Ears and Eyes: Breeder standards dictate that husky dogs' eyes should be oblique, medium-spaced and almond-shaped. Their eyes can range in color from light (blue) to dark (brown), and it's not unusual for a husky to have two different-colored eyes or single eyes of mixed color. Their ears are small and triangular in shape.

Tail: Husky dogs have bushy, sickle-shaped tails.

Alaskan and Siberian husky puppies maintain many characteristics of their wolf ancestry, though they fortunately lack the wild and unpredictable disposition of wolf crossbreeds. Both puppies and adult dogs tend to wail and howl rather than bark and will usually protest with caterwauling cries if forced to do something against their will. However, they're excellent companions, and unlike breeds such as the papillon, they're good with children and make suitable family pets.

AKC Group: Working

Training: Husky dogs tend to fare poorly in obedience competitions because they grow bored of repetitive tasks fairly easily. They're strong-willed and intelligent, and it takes patience and commitment to train a husky puppy properly. Professional guidance is recommended.

Ideal Environment: These dogs don't like warm climates. They're happiest in the outdoors and are best suited to cooler environments given their thick fur.

Health and Care

Feeding: Considering their energetic nature, these dogs need a high-protein, high-calorie diet. Don't leave husky dogs unsupervised in the kitchen or anywhere else food is kept because they'll often steal it.

Grooming: Brush or comb the hair of a husky dog once or twice daily to remove dead strands. This breed is hairy and sheds profusely in spring. It helps to bathe the dog during shedding season to expedite removal of hair tufts.

Exercise: The husky is a tireless breed and grows bored easily if it isn't exercised enough, which can result in destructive behaviors including gnawing, scratching and digging. Vigorous daily activity is strongly recommended by husky breeders.

Health Problems: While all large canines are prone to problems like arthritis in dogs, no dog breed is without its own specific set of health concerns. Cornea problems, ulcers and thyroid deficiencies rank among the most common problems husky dogs face. They also wander by nature, which makes them prone to accidents.

Average Lifespan: The life expectancy of a husky is 10 to 12 years.

Buying a Husky Puppy

Expect husky breeders to charge roughly $450 to $800 for a healthy, dewormed husky puppy that's had its first canine vaccinations. Though it's possible to get a new pet for considerably less at a puppy mill, these businesses don't treat their dogs ethically and place little value on the health of their animals.

I know you may want a husky, But you might want to do some checking and see if that's the breed you really want, I have had 3 Huskys and they are extremely full of energy, they are not the type you can just sit down and cuddle with and expect to pretty much take care of itself, Huskys require a great deal of your time, and you would be best to start with a puppy as young as you can get it. good luck and best wishes

I am looking for a small siberian husky or a Klee Kai (minature husky). We had a siberian Husky named Rocky and he was the most beautiful dog. He passed away last December after 14 years. We have a 4 year old cockapoo but I miss my husky and our cockapoo would love a buddy to play with in the backyard. We are a family of 6 with 4 boys 13, 10 and 7 years old. They are all excellent with animals and never play too rough or mistreat our pets. If anyone has a husky or Klee Kai that needs a home we would love to hear from you. We have a fenced in yard and this dog would be an indoor dog as I am a stay at home parent.

A husky is a huge responsibility, I wouldn't recommend one for a boy that wants one to play with and keep him company, Huskys have a short attention span and get very destructive, I have had 3 and they have taken most of my time, and they play very rough, usually bringing blood. I would suggest doing a lot of research before getting one, I have had to remodel an entire house because of the one I have now, He loves to play but he is very rough, good luck and best wishes

We have a male ACK registered Husky we would like to breed with an ACK registered female Husky. We are not looking for a breeder, we are looking for someone who loves their 'not like any dog' best friend as much as we do. We have raised him since he was 8 weeks old. We know his parents and the owner. We would like pick of the litter because we want to have his son. We are located in the Dallas/Fort Worth area.

My ten month old husky doesn't have the same tendencies as the rest of the breed from what I can tell. She, like many other huskies, is very loyal to me to the point where if she gets off of her leash or something she runs back to me instead of running for the hills like I heard so many do. Unfortunately, she also cries every time I leave the room or leave her in the backyard. She can be sitting outside with two other people but if I walk away she cries and jumps on the door. Is there anything I can do to help her with this anxiety, she is crate trained just fine. She also doesn't always eat her food, for instance she'll eat her bowl in the morning but at night she will barely touch her dinner, is that weird? She also pants, A LOT! Even when she's next to a fan or outside on a really cold day, she just kinda sits there panting looking like she's high basically. The last time I took her to the vet though she had a perfect bill of health and they said the breathing was normal, i just don't know if that's true...any advise on these problems? It would really help a lot!! Thanks

I have a husky puppy and he acts the same way. I thought this constant panting was because maybe he was thirsty all the time so I give him water constantly and his panting has lessened since then. These dogs get dehydrated easily so make sure to give them lots of water! Also my dog is the same when i leave a room he cries and whines until i return even if there are other people with him he tries to follow me. Normally these dogs are used to having a "master" or someone who constantly gives them demands, if you are the one your dog spends the most time with that is probably why. Your dog looks to you as it's mother and wants to be with you at all times
Posted by haley chandler on December 28,2012 at 09:16 AM
You need to read up on the breed, as this is a working dog that requires several hours of exercise a day. The dog requires a fenced yard (at least six feet tall), locked gate, and pavers under the gate as the type of dog is known to dig out and escape. The dog requires a lot of attention, pac oriented, and usually requires another dog for companionship. Please do not get a dog just because your son wants one, unless you are wiling to devote the needed amount of time this breed requires. There are far too many huskies turned into the pound, because the person did not know how active this dog can be.

I have three huskies and they are my life. My fiance and I have been together for 6 years and we have no children but they are an awesome substitue. They are like kids in so many way. If they are being to quiet, you better see what they are into and no matter how mad you get, one look from those "Im Sorry" baby blues and all the anger disappears! Our oldest just celebrated his 3rd bithday on Oct.15th. I seen Carol's post about her girl being 19 and I just wanted to tell you that I pray I am as lucky as your family! If I can have my babies until they are 19, I will be the happiest person ever. This breed steals your heart and once you get used to living with thier wild, hyper, howling antics.. you learn you can't live without them and don't know how you ever did! For ayone who is on facebook, I created a group called Husky Love. It's a page where we share pics and stories and chat about our Husky's. If anyone would like to join you can get there by going to I hope to hear from you all there!

Proud owner of a gorgeous princess Siberian Husky, Roxxy. She is just 8 years old and still as much energy and fun as the day we brought her home when just a pup. Roxxy is an amazing pooch, I never knew how much fun a dog could be until we had her. I have had many dogs in life but this one takes the cake. So playful, loving, michieveious, and downright clown antics at times too. If she finds something that makes you laugh or play, you can bet she will continue to do it. Kids, she loves em...all sizes and ages. So smart, she has different levels of play for different ages, so intelligent. Toys..destroys them but cherishes the shredded peices....any remaining parts are still in the toy box. Obedience...Took ALOT of time, patience, and work . She fully knows what you want her to do right away, but she will continue to challenge you because she is stubborn. She will eventually understand that you are the boss and she will comply with the command. I would happily get another one. Before you get one, be sure you are ready for it. This is not a dog you can take to the park with a frisbee.....she has to be on a leash when not in a fenced yard..and even the fenced yard is not a guarentee if you leave them outside too long on their own. They get super bored by themselves and find ways to get out, places to dig, all kinds of trouble and then they think it's funny. =) Good luck if you get a Husky...your children would love you for it as they really are the best playmates ever!

I have a husky, and she is our baby girl. She was a yr old when we got her, she turned 19 last month. She has been a lot to take care of but we wouldn't trade her for the world. She protects my boys still and they are grown now, she does miss them though that they aren't around as much. There are days when I think that she isn't going to make it for much longer and then she will be running around in the yard like a puppy again. I live in Minnesota and the summers can get hard on her, we go for walks after eight or nine at night, and she stays in the air condition during the day but that first snow she still rolls in the snow and runs around. I tried to stop the digging and if you have one don't waist your time it is what they do. She digs and then lays in the hole. She loved to put the harness on and pull the boys on sleds, and my youngest would have her pull him on his skateboard. They are wonderful loyal dogs. I would get another one in a heartbeat.

Reading these comments, I felt the desire to comment on my own experience. In 2009, I had to put down my beloved black lab/chow mix girl. Both my peke-a-poo, my daughter and myself were heartbroken. With my daughter in school and me working full-time, my little boy (Ozzy) refused to eat or drink and moped around all the time. I inquired within two months to a friend of mine whose mother works with SAFE here in Central Florida. (Save Animals From Euthanasia) The very FIRST photo she sent me was of an 18 month old husky/yellow lab mix and that was all I needed to see. He has beautiful dark brown, almond-shaped eyes and "looks like eyeliner brown" around his eyes. Nearly identical to my Tabatha's eyes. I got him the very next day for $60, with all shots taken care of and up to date. We named him Maksim (as in DWTS), calling him Maks, due to his confident but silly nature. He still three years later does pirouettes when he's excited and wants to go out. He loves running, we have a completely fenced in yard, with a cow pasture lining one side of the property. He dances, not with wolves as you'd expect, but cows. As far as the comments I've read from others, my Maks is definitely a sweetheart, but would lay down his life to protect myself, my family, my pets, and even my elderly neighbor who regularly gives him and the other boys treats. (at current count, we have FOUR boys...Maks, Ozzy and their new baby brothers--Rylan and Cricket--both are Shih Tzu) Maks is quite the champ in tolerating both Ozzy's "grumpy grandpa" nature and the babies' crazy, licking, gotta be moving and grabbing whatever we can at the same time nature. He looks out for them and even plays mediator. That being said, we do know that Maks's original owner was cruel to him, and his foster mom kept him in a crate a majority of the time. (weighing in at a happily large but not fat 85 pounds--not crate material) We have learned, over time, which is something all dog and future dig owners should be prepared for, that due to his early life experiences, Maks's pain and hurt from the prior owners' abuse and neglect comes out at one time only...when he sleeps. He will cry out, shiver, and spasm during dreams...and as they say, NEVER wake a sleeping baby OR dog abruptly. The incidents of aggression toward non-strangers of the human kind have taken place only twice, once toward me and once toward a good friend of my daughter's, when trying to awaken/move him during one if his bad dreams. I don't think that anyone can absolutely predict the behavior of any dog/canine breed. I encourage everyone to search out rescues and no-kill shelters, but find out everything available about your pet-to-be...not just research on the "typical" behavior and appearance of the breed, but anything you can about their lives as well. Maks is the favorite child in my house, and the only one who will sit, shake, and lay down/roll over on command. He is also ready to take on the put bull on the other side of the fence from ours at the slightest need. (we put up the privacy fence around the perimeter once Gilbert entered the picture) Hence, he is a good and protective big boy---taking care of all creatures he loves---human, canine, and feline. He is wary of men, but only aggressive when he's put on guard by intuition, wonderful with children, and highly tolerant of critters smaller than he is...unless you happen to be a squirrel or a turkey. I actually came here wondering how Maks would fare if he did have to square up against the pit, as Gilbert is regularly left off the lead anymore and tensions have risen in this small neighborhood. What I learned in doing do, however, is that they can have common characteristics, but I didn't learn anything about my Maks that I didn't already know. He is a wonderful loving animal, but one with serious pressure in his jaws, that will use them when necessary to protect his "family" of humans and 3 canine brothers and 2 feline sisters, and even a female hamster who has since passed away...or himself if in the precarious position of not knowing how to wake the beautiful boy when having a night-terror. He's "my" dog, not replacing my sweet Tabby-Girl, but adding more than enough to give all of us what we needed to let her go. Just love your pets, people, and get to know them before making up your mind about them. They can, and will, often surprise you. My landing on this page has allowed me to feel confident in my boy. He may not be a "guard dog" according to breed, but he's protective of us and those we love. That's good enough for me and I'm proud to be his momma.

My husband and I adopted a Siberian husky mix last week from a kill shelter. He is a year old according to the shelter & was also a stray. Two days ago we noticed he had some blood in his stool and also had diarrhea(had that a few days more). We were thinking it was possibly the dog food but not sure. Hes acting normal, no change in behavior. Can anyone give me some advice please. Thank you in advance
Posted by Brenda on October 03,2012 at 02:17 PM
Scary yes? It sounds like he may have hook worms. Have the vet check his stool as soon as possible. Good Luck
Posted by Rayray69 on September 29,2012 at 04:54 PM
Please take him to the vet and get him checked out. My golden retriever had a very similar episode in Jan of this year and it seemed to clear up. But in August he had another episode and we took him in to the vet it was too late he past with 72 hours of the first day we had noticed his stool. Mind you he was 12 years old but he still seemed so young at heart. His x-ray showed he had an enlarged intestine and we were able to take him home and we were told to bring him back for a G.I. but he didn't make it past 8:00am my only comfort was that he was here with us and not in some cold cage by himself. If you can have them do a study. If you don't have insurance on him get it now and have them do a full work up on him. I hope he is doing better. But don't put this off too long it could be a sign of a bigger problem.

We had this same experience the other week. We noticed that our husky pup was having wet poop. Although he was acting normally, we noticed that he was sleeping more than the usual hours he sleeps in a day. We thought it would just pass but then one night he just stopped moving. We rushed him to the pet hospital and he was admitted for two days. Docs ruled out parvo virus although they said that indications like those should not be taken for granted because those are also symptoms of parvo virus which is very deadly for pets. But anyway since he's having diarrhea like what my dog had, it would be best if you bring him to the dog before he gets dehydrated. Also, blood in his stool is not normal. Hope I was able to help.
Posted by Nicqui on August 27,2012 at 06:09 PM
Thank you. I took him to the vet the next day and they think it was his food. But they said to keep an eye on it an if it gets worse to bring him in! But thank you for the advice. Hope your puppy is doing alot better.

Yes we picked up a 1 1/2 old female husky about 3 weeks ago, now she love the boy's and the boy's her. She tends to listen to the boy's and my wife but not me. She will also challenge me when I go out in the back yard. Does anyone have any suggestions as what we can do about that. I don't want to take her back to the shelter but if I can't go out in my own back yard then what choice do I have. Thanks in advance for your advice.
Posted by Lee Miles on January 30,2013 at 03:18 AM
It sounds like you have an alpha female. Especially in "pack" dogs, this can get complicated. She has obviously recognized your wife as Alpha female in your pack, but is unsure of your position. My Zoe is also an Alpha and this is a routine we go thorough nearly every day, determining if I am still the Alpha male. My best suggestion is to play with her, on your rules. Also, walking her (always on a lead) in "Heel" position will re-enforce your role. Zoe is required to "sit" to have the lead snapped on. A suggestion, btw, in teaching her to "heel": bring her to the "heel" position (choose one side and stick to it) and when she is comfortable there, then say "heel" and tell her she is a "good dog". "Heel" should be a comfortable command, not a disciplinary measure. It is in the nature of sled breeds to pull, never walk her on a harness, she won't understand that she is not to pull. I recommend a separate command when she is allowed to range at the end of the lead, if she is truly an Alpha, she will need to be able to "mark" just as a male would. Keeping her in "heel" position for too long is going to frustrate her. The thing to remember at all times is that Siberians (as well as Malamutes) are too smart by half. She will learn the commands very quickly, but will ignore them at a whim. Never let a command be ignored. Above all, talk to her, she has the intelligence of a four year old human (or better) and needs communication. Sled breeds (like their wolf ancestors) talk to each other almost constantly, explain what you are doing and why. If all she gets from you are commands, she will think you are stupid and have a limited vocabulary, not a position you want to be in with a breed this smart. Siberians are sensitive dogs and I have seen many messed up examples of the breed simply because they were not treated with the respect they deserve. They require patience and physical contact. I have raised all my dogs like they were children (or vise versa) and all seem to have turned out fine. Congratulations on your acquisition, but remember that you have acquired a friend, one who needs to be reassured on a regular basis.
Posted by Chris on September 07,2012 at 06:14 AM
Your the man, she's the dog. let her know who's boss. Husky's are pack animals by nature and she is challenging you for top spot in the pack. Do you have any fear of your dog or dogs in general? If so she will pick up on it and this is likely the reason for the challenging behaviour. From my experience with huskies they are very nice dogs and they are happy being at the bottom of the "pack" as long as they know their place, If she gets aggressive tell her off and send her to her basket. It doesnt really matter what you say to her its how you say it. The dog will be more fond of you if she knows where she stands.
Posted by Wade on October 16,2012 at 04:25 PM
hold her mouth shut and put her on her side/back, make sure to hold here there until you hear her whimper. When she whimpers she is acknowledging you are the the leader. It's crucial she doesn't get lose before she whimpers.

So I am the owner of a now 15 month old husky. Back in May of 2012 I had to find her a new home on the orders of my child's Dr. He said that the pets in our home were triggering his asthma. Turned out he doesn't have asthma and he was allergic to one of his many allergy medications. The family that we gave her too brought her back to us within the week. Someone then broke into my backyard and she got out. With huskies having the natural want to run that is exactly what she did. She had been missing since May and was found about 2 weeks ago on the street and very pregnant. Her microchip brought her back to us and boy were we happy, but we noticed one thing straight away. She had beautiful caramel colored eyes and now one is solid ice blue and the other is caramel with spots of the ice blue. Has anyone ever heard of this happening. Also proud to say that last night she gave birth to 8 little girls.

I have a five year old female Siberian husky (weighs 49 pounds) who I take running with me almost every day, lately we have been running about five miles a day. While I want to start running farther than that I don't want to overwork my dog! Does anyone know how far she should be running each day/week, and how far is too far?? Also, should I be worried about joint problems?

I have had huskies or husky mixes for over 35 years and the ones that ran with me ran as long as I could keep going. My first was a husky/shepherd and I started running with her when she was a puppy up to 7-8 miles a day. She continued to run like that til around 10yoa and I continued walking with her up to 15 miles a day. She lived to the age of 14 and enjoyed every minute of her runs even though after she aged, she was in more pain. They will run to exhaustion and do the same the next day.

I have a month old puppy who has been vomiting, does any one have an idea why this might be happeing to him???
Posted by rebecca on February 03,2013 at 06:58 AM
also some dogs cant handle certain foods like my beagle sheltie mix his stomach is very sensitive and very picky on what food it likes. Almost every food i bought for the first month and a half would make him vomit. I finally found the only food that works for him and unfortunately its not a very healthy food as it is a cheap corn and wheat based food with some meat and by products but atleast it keeps his tummy happy. Hope this helps a little and also if he is that young try adding a little warm milk to the food to soften it up for him and he definately should have stayed with mom until atleast 6 weeks but more preferably 8 weeks
Posted by Barb on July 28,2012 at 05:28 PM
I don't understand how you have a one month old puppy. Puppies should not be taken away from their mothers until they are 6 weeks old at the earliest and fully weaned. Your puppy may be throwing up because it is too young to digest the food you are giving it to eat. E-mail me if you need help. barb

I have an eight-month old husky/German shepherd mix (3/4 husky and 1/4 shepherd) and he is the BEST dog ever. He's loving, friendly, intelligent, and pretty obedient and well-behaved (he'll occasionally have a stubborn moment, though.) He's friend to both canine and human, and wants to play with every dog he sees. He's actually pretty easy to train, despite my research into the husky breed telling me otherwise. He keeps on mastering new tricks and we're constantly thinking of new things to teach him. He is extremely loyal, and frequently needs our permission to listen to other people's commands, and always follows us around our apartment. I can only count on one hand the amount of items he has destroyed; however, he is a digger! Is this a fluke, or perhaps the German shepherd has mellowed out some more of the "negative" husky aspects? How did we end up with such a charmer!?

Im 20 and have had my Husky for a year now. I found Zeus in a shelter needing adoption, so i rescued him and my girlfriend rescued our other husky Sasha. They are the most beautiful and playful dogs iv met and a pleasure to own. It upsets me to think what would of happened if we didnt adopt. We got Zues at 3yrs and Sasha at 9mths. I strongly urge any dedicated owner to look through rescues to not only find your next companion but also to save a life.

wanting to know if it is okay to cut my husky's coat , is there a problem with doing this.
Posted by Tammy on November 28,2012 at 09:37 AM
You should not cut your Husky's coat it is meant to protect them from over heating in the summer as well as keeping them from the cold in the winter.

For all people interested in looking for a husky, or any dog in that matter, make sure MONEY IS NOT AN ISSUE and you have TIME and CARE that you can provide for a dog before you even consider owning one. I have been the owner of TWO siberian huskies, one male and one female, both un-neutered so you can imagine the issues that may arise with that, the male being VERY HYPER and MISCHIEVOUS and the female being very CALM and "In-Her-Shell". They are amazing dogs but I would strongly recommend to anyone to research THOROUGHLY into huskies etc before buying them, they are so so so different to other dogs and they are not going to turn out like the huskies you see off movies that are fully trained and obedient, Husky puppies are like any other and require ALOT of attention and exercise. I was unable to handle the two huskies alone so I carefully re-homed my male husky into a loving family (A married couple who I visit with my female pup very often). He is doing brilliantly, and ever since I have had only the female, It enabled me to train her properly and give her alone the attention she deserves. They are AMAZING AND BEAUTIFUL DOGS, but they are loving animals at the end of the day not just a pet for Christmas so you can play with them in the snow and change your mind a few weeks down the line. My 10 Generation pure bred siberian husky is now 1 year 4 months old and I never knew until I bought her how much hard work owning a dog would be, how much FINANCE is needed and how much TIME out of every day is needed to give her my full attention. Don't abuse them, if you are seriously considering buying a husky, RESEARCH first, and if you are interested in becoming a new husky owner and getting a pup for FREE?!?! you are clearly not ready to be a husky owner. If you don't have the money to buy one, you obviously don't have the money to take care of one for the 10-12 years (average). THINK BEFORE YOU BUY

i so agree with you and wish more people would realize this .where i live i see cats bought and thrown out all the time.i see dogs come and go .i have a nerve disease and have had to rehome one dog ive it is so cruel to just throw them out or take them to the yorkie one of my babies and now my husband and son want a husky .i am finally willing but thank god i had one growing up because now i know what i am in for.

wow delfina you must be the most stupidest person. No one will give you a puppy less than 6 weeks. And the way you write makes you sound like a child. Puppy farms know not how to take care of a dog but just to breed them, I feel sorry for whatever dogs are in your care. A puppy farm is just another name for a puppy mill. You should be ashamed of yourself.

I have a siberan husky named Cloud. they are FANTASTIC dogs. she is very smart and i cant leave her alone outside cause she knows how to get out of anything i put her in. they are a callenge at first but you get to understand them. with cloud punishment never helped until i bit her ear. it sounds cruel but its really not. your showing dominance and she actully listened after. dont let them be the boss or everything will get much worse. but they will be your best friend very quickly with the right exercise and attention. i couldnt see myself with out cloud =].

i just got a two year old husky he is pretty hyper we got him because the owners could not continue to keep him.He would have been brought to the pound. We use to have a lab and have been looking for a puppy and ended up getting a two year old husky not sure if he is sybirian or alaskan i dont know much about the breeds. I would like help and information on how to really take care of him and the behavior of the dogs. Like if they like to be outside more then inside and if it will be bad if my father runs the woodstove inside. Last night he was panting like he was hot but it could have been a sign that he is still missing his old owners. If some1 could share a little info it would be aprreciated thanks.
Posted by Amy on April 09,2012 at 11:23 AM
They really like to be outside. They are not meant to be inside due to the long hair which will make them too hot to be indoors. As long as he is getting the proper attention and exercise he will calm down and adjust to the new environment. We have had a husky for 10 yrs and just got another one. I love all breeds but the husky is my favorite. As far as I have witnessed unless you are very confident I wouldn't let them just run without a leash. I have mine tied to a 100 ft run that way he can excercise even without me. Good luck and enjoy.

i think these comments are horrible, everyone just discussing the price ? and people trying to find someone to buy a dog from on here? This is a site used for its information.. and im sorry but a lot of these people dont even sound intelligent enough to own a husky. They're extremely intelligent dogs that require alot of time and attention, and, must i say it, money. You have to be headstrong to own a husky, they challenge you and push every limit that they can. They're not pushovers, they wont back down. But they're amazing dogs too! When the right techniques are used they learn fast, and are very fun & also social. I dont know what I'd do without my husky, he's my bestfriend (: and this is the type of things people should be discussing on a site like this.

I have a Husky/Poodle mix and Oh what a wonderful combination!! He is solid white with beautiful caramel eyes and and a thick ostrich plume tail that curves over his back. He has a wonderful disposition, and the intelligence of both breeds. He loves to go outside, but he hates the heat! He has figured out very early on that the air vent is the place to get cool! It has been very hot in the South so we try to get most of our time outside in the early morning or evening. He loves children, and likes to play (see if you can catch me, and I stole your toy, come and get it.) He's territorial, and doesn't like strangers by his fence, yet he doesn't bite. He learned to heel and sit at 12 weeks. Dogs are only as smart as their owners. Teach them early and things will become second nature. He pees on command and has since about 12 weeks. He knows the meaning of at least 20 words and gets in the car at up command and out of the car on out command. He is house trained and has such an affectionate nature, and he is only 8 mos. old! I would'nt sell him for 5 K dollars! As I type he paws my hands to get off the computer. Wow,how lucky was I to rescue him from life in a cage, and never to have touched grass!
Posted by ZoeMonsterMom on July 29,2012 at 05:21 PM
I agree! The Husky is not a pushover dog. It doesn't listen unless it feels like you deserve it. You must demonstrate that you are the alpha through your actions, not screaming and yelling. They are a healthy breed, remarkably free from the defects and genetic issues you see in a great many breeds. However, you need to understand that they are pack animals with immeasurable energy that need attention, training, and exercise. If you cannot commit to properly caring for this dog in *every* aspect...and just want one because of their distinctive need to move on. They aren't decorations.

I have a husky/lab mix. He looks identicle to a husky except his ears havnt perked up yet. He is almost 6 months old. Will they eventually stand up?
Posted by innaOfCA on January 16,2013 at 05:23 AM
Colton, it's been almost a year since your post... I'm curious, did your doggie's ears eventually stand up?
Posted by NL on September 26,2012 at 10:53 PM
You can check with your vet but I believe there is a procedure they can perform to make the ears stand up.
Posted by Spud Unger on June 29,2012 at 05:37 PM
I had 2 husky/lab mix although the lab half was mixed. They were great dogs. Both had pointy ears so they must have received the ear gene from their husky mother. Their father may have has some shepherd in him too which might account for the ears. Your boy should be a little easier to train since he's part lab and isn't full husky lol.
Posted by Ross on March 26,2012 at 05:12 AM
No, they won't. Due to the mixture of lab in his genes, he's never going to have fully perked ears.

I hope at least some of the people read the artical above. especialy the part about expecting a breeder to charge an average 450 to 800 for a healthy puppy
Posted by vash on January 03,2012 at 03:58 AM
Some of you people are crazy. Really saying I can't afford to pay for one or I can only pay 50 dollars come on get a clue. Sorry to burst your rediculous bubble but owning and caring for a pet is expensive. Dog food is not free their toys collar leash and vet visits won't be either. So if you can't afford to even buy one don't look for one cause the dog will end up suffering for your lack of funds and wishful thinking
Posted by delfina on June 07,2012 at 11:21 PM
Dude SHUT UP!!! I got my purebred husky puppy for $160 I didn't want to pay much bc I need money for the vet bills food toys and shots which cost a lot I had 400$ but I only wanted to pay $160 bc of of the other things I told u" So U GET A CLUE AND SHUT UP!!!" maybe people have the same problem May be u even got your dog for a low price like $50 so If I were u I would SHUT UP !!!
Posted by william on January 22,2012 at 11:01 AM
i got a 1 month old turning 2 months this week husky for 100$ and its healthy but i could afford it for more it was just the owners were not breeders and there dog had puppy's and they did not want any more dogs so they gave them away to most people for 150 but to me and my cousin for 100 and they still have 2 females left because every 1 loves males but my point is it is possible just hard to find and any ways vet care cost around 400$ for 1 visit and food is not very expensive but the cage and toys combined can be expensive but toys you can buy from dollar stores for a low price but not the cage.
Posted by millsgirl on January 11,2012 at 02:26 PM
I so agree! If you can't afford to pay for a puppy then you for sure can't afford to take care of one. You need to wait until you are in a stable financial situation before you get a dog. Especially a Siberian Husky. I have a precious husky pup named Raynee, and I wouldn't trade her for anything in the world, but with that said she is a lot of work. It takes a lot of time and effort to take care of a puppy. They aren't that different from a baby in a lot of ways. When you bring a dog into your home, you need to think of them as a part of your family. If shown the right kind of love and care Siberian Huskies will be a very loyal pet. Think about what you are doing before you do it. I know they are beautiful and that as soon as you seen those big blue eyes you want one, but it's a major responsibility and if you can't afford that responsibility you have no business trying to take it on.

Posted by Allyse on November 26,2011 at 03:24 AM
We paid $1350 for our purebred Siberian to make sure he was healthy & well taken care of before we got him. I guess that if you're in the right place at the right time you can find one cheaper or one in need of a good home, but I would be sure to check where it came from & how it was treated. Be careful what you wish for because you may get a cheap puppy w a whole lot of health & developmental problems which will cost you a fortune anyway or break your heart. There are so many people asking for FREE puppies here.. just a thought.. If you can't afford to buy the puppy, you may not be able to afford to keep it, bc puppies are expensive to care for. I think having a healthy & happy pet is the most important thing & there's LOTS of rescue mixes that need homes too.

Woo! That's a lot of money there buddy! I got my purebred husky puppy for $160!healthy I still need to take hi To his vet again in a week for another parvo shot No he does not have parvo but I am giving his parvo shots so he won't get parvo he is de-wormed and when he is 4 months old he needs his Raibes shot puppies can only have their raibes shot at 4 months if given younger( trouble)! He is really cute smart and fluffy has a wooly coat in the 2 layer he is a cinninom color with a little darker fur on his head and face cutest mask has a white tip on tail and has a electric blue eye and a hazel eye he is now 8 and a half weeks old! Smart and so far well-trained!:) good luck on your husky ;)!

Okay whoever wants a healthy husky under 700 dollars .. Tell me when you find one. Backyard breeders will sell them for less but I would never trust one. I'm 17 and just bought one for 900. Ive been looking for one for a year so If you want one raise your price or don't get it. Sorry not trying to be mean but seriously !!! I just had to comment. And you will never find one for 20 dollars. If your only willing to spend 20 then don't get it they require a lot of time and money. And my friend just bought one for 1600. Get real people.
Posted by Tammy on November 28,2012 at 09:48 AM
Kelly you are right, many health problems don't even show up until age 3. Yes someone might get lucky and get one free as I did and I owned him for 12 years he was 14 when he passed. But chances are it's not going to happen.

Posted by bree on January 16,2012 at 06:43 PM
hmm, I got one recently for300, she is very healthy and smart, I think it just takes a lot of looking to find the one you love at the right time
Posted by Tedo on November 03,2011 at 11:13 PM
Wow there are so many rude comments here... Anyways. The price you pay for a husky just depends on where you go. You can sometimes find people willing to give away huskies to a good home. Sometimes people will just sell them for cheap, especially if they don't have papers. But the one thing you can count on is that if you go to a breeder you will spend hundreds. Sometimes thousands. But you would have a puppy worthy of dog shows if that's what you like to do. I just got my female husky puppy from a friend who sold the whole litter for $100 each, pure but no papers. She's just a house pet, not a show dog so I dont need her to have papers. Just take the time to look around and you will find a husky in your price range.
Posted by Aimee on March 13,2012 at 08:15 PM
I was wondering where you got the puppy from? I bought my Husky from a breeder a little over a year ago for that price (which I know is super rare) and I REALLY need to get his shot records. So I;m desperately trying to find the breeder I got him from!

Huskies are a wonderful breed that need A LOT I mean A LOT of attention and exercise these dogs cannot just sit inside a house for 8 hours with nothing to do because they will become destructive. I have a 1 year old Siberian Husky named Luka who I love dearly, but if he doesn't get the attention that he needs he will show you, trust me. Their is a great Siberian Husky Rescue league in Omaha Nebraska but I'm sorry you aren't going to be paying 100 bucks for one. The cheapest Husky that is there is $350 but this rescue league takes care of their huskies and look for any health problems, plus they will personally come to your home and check you out, you cannot go into the rescue league and leave with a husky, because they want their huskies to go to the best home possible. If you have an apartment I recommend not getting a husky, yes they are beautiful but there breed really does need a lot of exercise. Don't get me wrong I know a couple who live in an apartment with a husky, but the wife is a stay at home mom and she takes the dog outside and goes on walks, and parks multiple times a day. Huskies are also known for being escape artists and I promise they are very good at escaping so never trust your husky off a leash, and also huskies aren't very good with cats unless they have been around them since they have been a puppy, but huskies will kill a cat. Just please be wise when selecting the dog you want, yes huskies are great with kids, they do not bark, they howl, they are active, and they are beautiful but they need more from you then what this dog will do just as a family pet. Huskies are not gaurd dogs either they will lick an intruder to death before attack them.

I have a male husky that needs a home. He is two years old and loves to be petted, brushed and walked. He is a rescue dog from up the street. Caged for most of his life and neglected, but sweet and full of energy. He needs a forever home. He is not good with other dogs (my dog) and has some issues that can be helped with the right owner. If your interested in this doggie please call. 979-203-0067 I live in Texas also. He is black and white, dark almost translucent brown eyes, handsome & unaltered. Free to a good home. Do you still have the male Siberian Husky? I am looking for a male siberian husky to replace the one that passed away 3 months ago (he was old). I already have one husky who needs a new playmate. I live in Oklahoma City, Oklahoma, but am willing to travel to pick up or meet half way. I am not a breeder but have owned husky's for the past 10 years. I also have a big back yard. If you have the dog, and are still looking for him a good home, could you email me or call me (405) 680-0004. Do you have any pictures you could email me? Thank you for you time. Cindy

if your dog has blood in his stools, you need to get him to a vet, whenever there is blood in their stools you need to have them checked out asap, to make sure everything is ok, I had a beautiful husky, and he was 5 years old, and got CANCER, so please don't wait take your dog to the vet.

HELP my dog is throwing up white foam and water he has diarheah and will not eat anything!
Posted by Rena on February 18,2010 at 11:07 AM
Hello I had the same problem with my dog and i found she ate a peice of her flea collar, so I never bought her one again. The vet advised me to get a med. dropper and dillute the dog's stomach with as much water as you can. the more food and water in it the better. It will probably vomit a few times but keep dilluting it's stomach with water. After that she got back her appetite and started eating and drinking again. She's much better now. It probably saved her life.
Posted by Sheana on December 14,2009 at 12:15 AM
You need to take the baby the vet! It could be something easily fixed and low cost, but if he has been sick longer than a few days... basically if you were throwing up stomach bial and not eating and being less active and shitting all over the place (and in pain)- it's not something that will just pass. Bring him to the hospital if you truly love him.

Does anyone know if there are any mixed breeds of the Husky that are small/medium size dog, with less fur coat too? I live in smaller, North FLorida neighborhood and am looking for a smaller dog, but my daughter loves huskies and wants one so badly. Are there any mixed breeds out there??
Posted by Q on June 18,2011 at 12:30 AM
There is a breed called an Alaskan Klee Kai, as well as Miniature Siberian Huskies, but they are rare, and expensive. Best of luck finding the dog for your family!

Posted by Joselynn on November 21,2009 at 11:26 PM
yes there is. i have a husky that is half husky, quarter pit bull and quarter rottweiler. and he is such a good dog. he is very shy has he was abused. but is a very loving and gentle dog. he will let anyone do anything that they want to him and he will not do anything but sit there especially with small children. i have had a 18 month sit there and pull on his ears and hit his mouth and he didn't even move his head. he has been the best thing to happen to me since my husband deployed last year. he also will alert me when he hears someone outside or near the house. all without being trained. he has been a little hard to train because he gets really bored so i have to mix it up but i am getting a female husky puppy in a few weeks and i cant wait because i now feel like this is the best breed out there. p.s. he looks completely husky right down to the crystal blue eyes, curled bushy tail and thick coat.

ok vwell i have to say the luck you are going to get a husky for less than two hundred is a dream and you can keep on dreaming. I was fortunate to find one from an adoption center rescue center in houston and he is black and white w/ blue eyes and pure bred w/ papers and all and got him for 200 and he is 10 mo old. DOes anyone know about them being mouthy to whre they want to chew on their owner though? i dont know if he is playing or what but i really want to break him of that!
Posted by shannon on September 29,2009 at 02:15 AM
here in randolph county, north carolina you can find ads in the local paper on a regular basis for husky pups rangeing at $150. i actually got my puppy for free met a lady taking my son to the doctor one day he is the real deal he is a husky check him out on my myspace. what they say about these puppies is true my pup has destroyed my carpet & walls , if your gonna get one of these dogs you,d better be a person with plenty of spare time.

hello , my name is shannon i have a black & white siberian husky that was just given to me . his name is wolf and he,s approximate 3 1/2 mo,s old . he has one blue eye one brown he is very energetic . i,ve always wanted a husky myself but i never knew how much work they could be when the dog was given to me it was like a dream come true but now i need to find a home for him. he is destroying my trailer and i rent. he is extremely dominate over my other dog showing aggression. i don,t know what to do , he is wounderful with my children just likes to eat the house , don,t get me wrong he will play with the other dog but he is not good at shareing. another thing about this dog the person who gave him to me never showed me any proof of vaccines , so i,ve waited to treat him so i wont take a chance of over dose ,, this dog needs a home some where were he can roam , if your interested in getting him for free the only thing i ask for is he be taken care of i do love the dog and hate to give him up but i can,t deal with him .

Hey, David my boyfriend & I are interested in breeding to sell pups new to this, so checking in as we speak. Don't know all the details, but we live in mid-south GA. Let me know, she's black & white w/ crystal blue eyes. We have papers to prove she's prebred. Thanks, Lindsey Spivey

Heyy guys i see that you are saying that 600 dollars is crazy to pay for a husky and yes i would say that to if the puppy or dog didnt have the needles or papers. But as long as they have those a pre breed husky can go from anywhere to 800 to 2000 with paper's and i know all this from my grandma she used to breed husky's for living and im gunna start doing that soon and im gunna be selling them from like 600 to 650 with papers and needles. And with all of that with the shoots and needles being all doen that is pretty cheap for a pre breed husky.

People you are all crazy if u think ur getting a husky for under 600 dollars. exspecially at $20!!!! most breeders and pet store owners will laugh in your face if u hand them $20 and say i want a husky. Yes they are beautiful dogs and lovable to anyone, but in REALITY they are 600-700 dollars and if u guys can't afford that then strait up you arnt getting a husky.

Hate to tell you Sarah you have a bad attitude and I think you need it to be straightened out because Alot of us don't have alot of money and for me I had a rough life and so the only reason I want a puppy at that price is because I don't want my dad to can't do that if you are just ruining what I have tried to get but can't just because of money problems so if you like hurting kids by saying what you had said then you are a real disappointment to everyone. So please let everyone say what they want and how much they want it for without your rude comment because you will just get alot of people upset just like you got me upset I am only a teen and I am trying to do my best at everything I can. Especially what happened to me in the past I just want someone to talk to a good companion that is why I wanted a puppy under $20 because of the money problems and my bad memories I am still trying to get past but really can't thanks for listening if you want to here from me some more call my number.
