Boxer

A complete guide to boxer dogs

The boxer is a strong, agile dog breed that originated in Germany. Though their extremely strong jaws can be intimidating, they're gentle and well-known for their loyalty and intelligence. According to registered ownership statistics, boxer dogs are among the most popular breeds in the United States.

Appearance

Height: An adult male boxer dog averages 22 to 25 inches in height at the withers; females average 21 to 23.5 inches in height.

Weight: Adults should weigh between 50 and 75 pounds.

Coat: The boxer has a smooth, short-haired, shiny coat. Brindle, red and fawn are the most common primary coat colors. White underbellies are common.

Ears and Eyes: Many boxer dog owners crop their pets' ears, though animal rights societies consider uncropped ears more humane. This breed's eyes are normally brown and display a high degree of alertness and intelligence.

Tail: Many boxer puppies for sale through breeders already have docked tails. Docked or undocked, the tails on these animals are naturally short.

Disposition

Boxer dogs are patient and gentle with children. This breed generally gets along well with other pets, especially other dogs, and rarely shows aggression when properly raised, trained and socialized.

AKC Group: Working

Training: This breed is renowned for its headstrong, stubborn disposition and generally won't respond well to retraining once it has matured. Dominant owners who start training boxer puppies early and use a positive reinforcement strategy generally enjoy the best results. Boxer breeders emphasize the versatility of these dogs, which can be trained to search, rescue, guard and lead the blind.

Ideal Environment: Because of their high energy levels, boxers are best suited to homes with adequate outdoor space. However, if socialized properly, a boxer puppy can grow up to be quite comfortable in apartment-style settings. They thrive in warmer climates since their short coats don't keep them very warm during cold winters.

Health and Care

Feeding: Boxers have sensitive stomachs. Feed them a high-protein diet of quality dog food.

Grooming: Because their coats are short, boxer dogs require minimal grooming.

Exercise: It's essential for boxer dogs to get daily exercise, since they tend to engage in destructive behaviors like chewing and gnawing if they're bored or underworked.

Health Problems: While all dogs display breed-specific health concerns, boxers are particularly susceptible to digestive tract troubles, heart problems, hypothyroidism, canine cancer, bloating and hip dysplasia.

Average Lifespan: Boxers have shorter life expectancies than smaller breeds like the chihuahua. Expect a healthy dog to live about 10 to 12 years.

Finding Boxer Puppies for Sale

Boxer breeders are an excellent resource if you're looking for boxer puppies that have proven parentage. A boxer puppy from a reputable dog breeder generally runs between $700 and $1,100.

Buyers should beware of purchasing dogs from puppy mills, which tend to be significantly cheaper but far less reliable and ethical. These farms pay little attention to the breeding quality and overall health of the puppies they sell, which can translate into big vet bills down the road.

Those who wish to adopt an adult dog can look to boxer rescue organizations. Here, buyers can find trained, fully grown dogs that have been taken out of abusive homes, or strays that have been taken off the street. Both boxer breeders and boxer rescue organizations can be found in most medium- and large-sized communities.

People looking for a "cheap" dog: ask yourself, "Do I have the money to support this animal in an emergency? If she/he gets hurt, can I afford the vet bills?" Too many of these animals are purchased on a whim and for cheap and that is why Shelters and Pounds are overrun with sweet animals. Especially those in search of a cheap puppy. Do you know that most animals are abandoned not during the puppy phase but from 9 months to 2 years old. This is the time where they start to have their own ideas about things and don't listen as well. Cheap puppies of most kinds can be gotten for cheap at any shelter or rescue foundation if you do the research. Rescues are a great option; it is just important to remember that it is a lifelong commitment that is very serious and CAN become expensive - regardless of your economic standing. Accidents happen and these furry friends deserve our monetary commitment to taking care of their health needs should they arise. So before you run out and get your free or cheap puppy; please realize that food/medicine/vet visits/beds/gates & fences/toys/and home repair don't come quite as cheap or easily, and those are all thjngs you need to be prepared to provide for LIFE.

I see this post was a few months ago. I'm a boxer mom and I'm sure by now your enjoying yours. But I just wanted to give a few suggestions of some food my girls like that doesn't break the bank and is good quality high protein food. I feed natures recipe easy to digest as boxers are known for having a very sensitive stomach. Welness and blue buffalo longevity are great. I hope to have both my girls on the longevity soon. Email me if you want to chat. Good luck!

My neighbor has a white boxer about 2 yrs old. The house is full of people and no one pays attention to the dear dog. He lives 24/7 on a high deck. I stop by every day and toss treats up to him. I want to see if they'd sell him to me. What would be a fair price? He's not neutered and I doubt seriously if he has any vet work. I'm guessing someone gave him to the man who owns him. That's the way dogs get passed around in their culture.

Dogs are expensive. We have 4 boxers and spend over $200 per month on dog food and treats and toys and vet bills. Please start saving up before you get a dog. That way if something does happen you will be able to take the puppy to the vet. Good Luck.

I have a Boxer, he is 10. as a puppy he was the cute loveable puppy, but I tell you as a adult Boxer he has his own mind made up of what he wants to do and that is it. I love because he is very protective and always let me know what's going on out side. but there are times he will want to go out and not come back for a while, or won't go out for days. I leave food out all the time, he never over eats, and now eats very little, but he has become a people food junkie. we don't feed him people food, but if he can get his mouth on some, he will knock you down to get it. He loves cheese, and peanut butter and beer. I would like another dog when he passes on, but I don't know that it will be another Boxer.. they are like little people....................lol

we have a stray boxer here at my Mom's. I say stray , she looks like someone used her for breeding , and she got away . She had sores around her neckbut they are all healed. She's been well fed and is in good condition. We would keep her but already have 4 dogs between our houses. She is a loving dog , not aggressive , but is very leary of men , cars and if you raise yor hand to her. She stays loose outside and I'm afraid of her getting heartworm or some other disease. I do hope you are interested in her, or know of someone who is. She loves children and cats.

hopefully you didnt get the puppy yet, if you really do want a boxer puppy... I have to recomend to you the site that i just found my daughter's new best friend on... it's called greenfieldpuppies.com all of the 'puppies' are AKC registered and the come from reputible breeders. They are all vet checked, and have their shots and wormer up to date. The prices are fair... My boxer puppy is 11 weeks old, and I paid $250 for him, he was $750 to begin with at 8 weeks. The people who run the site do go and constantly check the breeders homes and the puppies, and they state on the site that NO PUPPY is placed on the site without the breeder showing them the paper work from the vet and their registraitions... Ginger: I too know the devastation of losing a beloved family member. We had 2 Blue Heelers & lost them within a year of each other. We now have a white Boxer pup & she's as good as gold. We also have a male Boxer pup (littermates) & he's proven to be too energetic for an old couple. He's fawn with a white belly & white markings on his face & paws. I live in Versailles, MO & don't know how close that is to your location, but we are looking for a loving home for our rambunctious little fellow & it sounds like if you were interested yours would fit the bill! God Bless you. And don't let anyone tell you that it gets better over time, I still think of, & miss my "kids".

Ginger, I know the heartbreak that you are feeling right now. I had a male boxer, Zeus, whom I raised from a pup. He lived to be 8 years old, he became ill and was gone within 3 days, with absolutely no warning, he had been healthy and vibrant the previous week. My heartache was undescribable. He was such a beautiful loving faithful companion, always waiting for me when I came home. It didn't matter if I was gone 5 minutes or 5 hours, the joy he had when I entered the door was true love. A word of advice to you is to look on Petfinder, After a month I couldn't stand this lonely house, one evening I went on Petfinders and there they were, not one but two who had been raised together, already trained but were given up by their master because he was deployed to Afghanistan. I contacted the no kill shelter that had them, made an appointment to go and see them, love at first site. My male is abnormally big and is disabled, it seems his master had taken him out on a camping trip and he was shot resulting in him loosing his left hind leg., but he never misses a beat and doesn't even know that he has three legs. He is a very large boy he stands up to my hips. The story was that he also had a sister, through many tears they were both given up for adoption, their owners only request was to keep them together because my little girl had always been his protector. He is a 95 lbs 3 legged boxer, she is a 75 pound sassy little girl who protects her brother fiercely. I agreed to take both of them because I coudn't bare to seperate them, and yes I thought I must have lost my mind taking them both, it was a decision that I have never regretted. They are absolutely the best dogs I have ever had, we've been a family now for 2 years, they sleep with me every night. Some of the best animals are in shelters that need a loving home.I had to do a 100 mile search to find them,. Keep looking, find one that is up for adoption, there are many different reasons that peope have to give their animals up. Save a life (or two) you won't regret it, rescue animals have been loved by someone and taken care of, it is a decision you won't regret. While I miss my boy Zeus, Duke and Lola have become my faithful companions with so much love to give, they to wait by the door when I'm gone but the love is two fold. Good luck in your search, a resuce dog is usually trained, well behaved but most of all so thankful to be rescued. The price is usually the cost of the vet bill to make sure they are healthy, I got both of mine cheaper that I would have had to pay for one. They were registered but as rescue dogs they were spayed and neutered. Wonderful companions, there are many Boxer rescue groups that could help you find you anoher baby, give a rescue dog a chance, you won't regret it and you will have saved a wonderful animal, your reward is unconditional love, they know that your saved their life. Save a life or two, your payment in return is a goofy fun loving companion that will love you unconditionally and bring great joy to you. Good luck in your search, it may take awhile, but again contact Boxer rescue organizations to find the new love of your life

My name is Stephenie. I'm 21 and I've been looking for a puppy boxer. Granted I don't have the money to buy one right now because everyone is charging outrageous prices, but I know I can take care of one. My family has had dogs all of my life, starting with a pure bred German Shepherd who died and we had him from the time I was in the 2nd grade til 7th grade. Our second dog we took in he was a stray and we had him for 2 years, my brother took him to college with him. Our last dog Snowflake was a Siberian Husky she was more like family and got out one day and by the time we found her, we got there an hour late and she was put down in an animal shelter. I've always wanted a boxer, and my sister will give birth to her first child soon, so to have a puppy for her to grow up with would be awesome, so if any one could reply I would definitely appreciate it. I'm in Stockbridge, GA. my email is SACollins88@gmail.com

I am looking for a boxer as well, but like everyone else, it is tough now with the economy. I have recently moved, due to my husband's job. I stay at home, we live in the Mountains of NC, and own 3 1/2 acres of land. I lived on a 288 acre farm, and rescued and raised boxers. I would find good homes for the dogs, once I nursed them back to health. I had 1 white female, my daughter, that went with me every where. She died 2 yrs. ago, and I have wanted another, but not really ready to love like that again. She was 4 weeks old when I bought her, her mother died while giving birth to 9 pups. Her name was Dixie Darling Choplin! I am now ready to give my love again. If I can help in anyway, I would love too. Thanks Teresa Choplin

I am loking for a free boxer, I am a grand mother of 5 children, which live with me. They just cant understand why our boxer of 10 years is not here anymore. ( She is in doggie heaven, now) I'm doing everything to keep my head above water right now. ( BILLS TO PAY) I have tried to explain to the children, they dont really understand. It is breaking my heart to vwrite this . But I really want the kids to have another Boxer. And I will not lie, I really want to have another, BOXER. I miss her so much. If anyone can help me or point me in the right direction, I would appreciate it very much. MEME

If youy cant afford to buy a boxer then you cant afford to feed it or give it veterinary attention whenit needs it sorry to say this but It is true I know how much it costs to keep a dog up properly.

I have 3 boxers that I am going to have to get rid of although I really really don't want to. My parents are going to have to move in with me and my husband and I will not be able to care for them anymore im afraid. So if you still want a boxer just let me know I would greatly appreciate it. I feel that I will not be able to provide enough attention to them anymore even though it breaks my heart. Thank you. I have one male whom is 2 years old and then I have the mom whom is 5 years old and her sister whom is 5 as well. I believe that the mom and pup should not be seperated because they have been together the whole time, the two sisters just tend to aggravate each other and fight so I believe they would be okay to seperate. Again thank you.

There are lots of anomal shelters around that put dogd to sleep every day. You should go get one from them and save a life ,but no one is going to give you a big full blooded Boxer for nothing after they have been out so much money to buy the parents and to feed them . dog food is not cheap.

We are willing to take good care of your boxers... we use to own two pit-bulls, one maltese, one mixed chihuahua and we needed to get rid of them because we moved out to a smaller home and our financial situtation. I just started a P/T job and we would love to own a dog again. I'm pretty sure that our 3 children and our little Liza ( Guine Pig) would be happy to have more company to play with. We are in Los Angeles, CA. 90023 I have no idea where you live. You may call me at (323)268-4482

Daisey is fawn and beautiful with a wonderful personality because she is with my daughter and myself everyday. I am dissabled now and a single mother.I am in the bed most of the time and the company of Daisey brings so much joy to my daughter and my life. I would love to have another boxer, playmate and boyfriend to Daisey. I cannot afford to pay much and would consider this a great blessing to add to my family. I live in the Nashville area in TN. Please consider blessing myself, my daughter and Daisey with another family member. Brindle or Fawn Akc registered. Thnakyou so much and may God Bless you

She is dying, she cannot even get up by herself anymore. I sleep with her, knowing she will be gone in the next day or two. Another will not take her place, but it will surley help, and I still have alot of love to give to another puppy. It does have to be a female. Males get very protective for me. Thank You Teri

I think adults are more expensive since most likely they have been trained. I rescued Sonny from Bay Area Boxer in San Jose, CA. I was told she was about 2 and is now 7. They don't have long lives, usually 10-12 if that years. Sonny I dread tha that day, she is my life and my protector. She is not mean, but knows who is a bad person inside like our electric guy. Never saw her get angry and mean towards anyone, but she knew there was something bad about the guy as she loves the mailman and UPS/FED X. I adopted her for a $220 donation. But they will come down in price if you show them how much you love them. There were two at the site I went to, and others placed in Foster Homes. One would not stop barking, but when Sonny came out of her crate, she sat by me like "Let's go". You could tell she had not been out much as she stared at every person from our 4Runner like "WoW life begins anew for me!!" I have had German Shepherds and Labs but Sonny took to training like ducks to water and only needed to be instructed once. Try your local Boxer Rescue. I live in Silicon Valley and at BABR there is a 12 week old pup, brindle, which I prefer. Sonny was not bobbed and is much cuter this way. They are very protective yet love everyone she feels is safe. I didn't have to train her much more than she was. While a puppy mill dog, somene took the time to train her, and she is whip smart and very obedient, but in a kind voice, she knows what I ask of her. She is beyond best dog I have ever owned. They are used by the police and sheriff and blind as well. Best dog in the world. She seldom barks but is alery and knows good from bad. A few times she got out the gate, left open by roommate and there she was sitting at the front door. She knows where she is loved. I would try your local Boxer Rescue Assn. I got Sonny from Bay Area Boxer Association/San Jose but for the whole bay area. There is that pup, so look and see. Th donation was up to me but a limit of $100 and I gave them $200 and I am not close to rich. She is good with everyone. Try looking at Rescue sites, as they are so grateful to go to a home, rather than live in a crate or just keep having puppies. At 2 Sonny had 3 litters by a mill. i was furious and my vet said at least 9 pups were born to her each time. Hope this helps!!! lyn

Posted by Bob on February 27,2010 at 10:21 PM
Sounds like she has an infection could be ear mites or a common cold. I took my fawn to the vet about a month ago she had a runny nose and a bad cough, she ended up having ear mites and was given an antibiotic for her nose and ear drops for her mites after a week she was feeling better, as for the stomach boxers are prone to stomach problems, I would get her to a vet asap. Don't let her suffer! Hope this helps.

There is a wonderful two-year old female white boxer. She's in Miami, Florida. She was rescued and has been treated very well and taken good care of. We met her and if we weren't focused on getting a boxer puppy, we would have taken her. She needs a good home and would love a playmate. If you're in Florida and interested, email me.
