Cat Adoption

Advice about adopting a cat

Cat adoption is an important process that helps control the pet population. Facilities are set up which house cats for the purpose of allowing potential owners to choose one to take home. Most cat adoption agencies provide an important service to the community with their dedication to take on excess pets and then find them suitable homes. Many such agencies offer veterinary services as well.

A large number of cats wind up in a cat adoption agency from owners who do not want their cat's offspring. If an owner failed to spay or neuter their cat, they could find themselves with a litter of kittens. This can present a problem for a pet owner, so many drop them off with cat adoption agencies. Stray cats are often found without tags and are generally brought to a shelter for owner identification or put into the adoption circuit.

How Cat Adoption Works

If a person wants to adopt a cat, they can go to a shelter and begin the cat adoption process. Most require the prospective owner to fill out paperwork, including name, address and other vital information. They will also be asked to present identification to verify their identity. These procedures are put in place for the safety of the animal. The cost to adopt a cat generally ranges from $100 to $300. This pays for the supplies used in caring for the cat and the maintenance of the facility. Cat adoption agencies can also supply starter shots, a bag of food and mandatory spaying and neutering. This aids in controlling the population.

Siamese cat adoption, Tonkinese cat adoption and Bengal cat adoption are slightly more specialized than the typical cat adoption procedure. These breeds are usually found in rescue shelters. Often, these are more expensive and work to preserve breeds of all ages. Kittens are harder to procure this way.

Help Your Cat Adjust to a New Home

After adopting a cat, it's important to acclimatize them to their new surroundings. If there is already a pet present, it is usually a good idea to keep them separated for a few days until they can adjust to the presence of each other.

Letting your cat know the location of the litter box is important when introducing the cat to a new home. The cat will become more used to its surroundings this way. Also, keeping the cat's food and water away from the litter box can encourage your cat to use the box. Cats, especially older ones, can be finicky about new surroundings. It's important to make every effort to keep them happy in their new home.

We are looking to adopt a SIBERIAN CAT. I am allergic. We have a beautiful Siberian already and she is totally attached to my hgusband. We have a daughter who is 11 who we got the cat for originally but the cat isn't interested in her or me. We think she only likes guys. I have heard that a male cat might bond better with my daughter and me. We really need a cat who would love to be picked up and carried around by my daughter and would sleep with her and love her. My daughter loves animals and is very gentle.

Colletta: Call the national ASPCA and report them. Call the local newspaper and get a story on the animal cruelty. Call the Better Business and local Chamber of Commerce and check how the donations are spent. Call the other shelters in the area and report what you've seen and ask them to inspect and rescue or shut it down. Call the police and report animal cruelty. Call the Humane Society and report it. . Go take pix of the mess and put them on the Internet with help from students. Expose what is going on and that is the best way to stop it. Shame them and also charge them with violations by getting the city officials involved. Get the students in the local high school to picket and expose the situation. Report this lack of care to the authorities, but also to the local TV stations. The Press can shine a light on the neglect and that can do wonders in making it a cause and brings like minded people to help.
